Florence Door No. 14

On first impressions, old doors, and the things architecture remembers.

I photographed this door in Florence in 2019.

It was one of many. I had begun collecting doors almost without meaning to—photographing them as we walked, imagining that one day I might frame them together in a grid on a wall. A small archive of entrances.

I never did.

And yet, years later, I still think about them.

The Constant Cup

MOMENT

There are few circumstances in life for which tea feels inappropriate.

Wake up — tea.
An old friend at the door — tea.
A sadness without quite the right words — tea.
Four o’clock and dinner still some distance away — tea.
Bed, a dog curled close, the day finally loosening its grip — tea.

For something so simple, tea has acquired remarkable ceremony.
